Live Bait — Bottom Rig

Difficulty: BeginnerBest seasons: Spring, Summer, FallStyles: boat, shore, kayak

A simple bottom rig with a slip sinker, bead, swivel, leader, and hook. Used for catfish, carp, walleye, and any bottom-feeding species. The slip sinker lets fish take the bait without feeling resistance.

When to use it

Best from late spring through fall when catfish, carp, and walleye actively feed on the bottom. Summer nights are prime for channel and blue catfish on cut bait. Spring walleye runs in rivers are ideal for bottom rigs with nightcrawlers or leeches.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. 1

Thread a bullet or egg sinker onto the mainline.

  2. 2

Tie on a swivel — the sinker slides freely above it.

  3. 3

Attach a 12–18 inch leader of lighter line to the other end of the swivel.

  4. 4

Tie the hook to the end of the leader.

  5. 5

Bait the hook with a nightcrawler (thread it on), cut bait, or prepared bait.

  6. 6

Cast to the target area and let the rig settle to the bottom.

  7. 7

Hold or prop the rod and watch for the line to jump or move sideways.

  8. 8

When the line moves steadily, take up slack and set the hook.

Pro Tip

For catfish, use stinkier bait in warmer water and fresher cut bait in cooler water. Fresh-cut shad out-fishes commercial bait in rivers most of the time.
